We have been in Fes hundreds of times. We speak Arabic. We have gone door to door meeting and getting to know riad owners for Riad Reviews. We feel very comfortable in the Old City. That’s why it surprised me when last Spring, my sister and I did a guided tour of the medina and I walked away with a whole new wonder and appreciation for the history medina.

The guided tour we did was a half day tour which finished at lunch. We went through several of the Old Koranic schools, the tanneries, the weavers, and the traditional pharmacy. Our guide spoke great English, was not trying to sell us anything or push us to visit certain stores. He was friendly and taught with great skill about the history, architecture and customs of the city.

For a visitor who comes to experience the medina, a guided tour is not a must for survival, but it really enriched my sister’s visit and let us see behind the scenes in the old city.
